KING'S ARENA

KING'S ARENA is a 2 Player brawler game developed on Unity Engine

This game is inspired by many local multiplayer games such as Bomberman, Super Smash Bros, Towerfall  Ascension and Gang Beast. With this game, we wanted to recreate the fun and exciting experience playing a video game with a bunch of friend in a room that we all love to do in the past.

The King’s Arena is the most celebrated event in the history of the empire. News of it would spread like wildfire and people from all corners of the world would travel to the capital just to spectate. The city itself will be livelier than usual and bustling with activities in preparation for the grand event.

​

In this game, players can choose up to 3 different unique playable characters which is Sir Randal, Candice and Nina.

​

Objective of the game is for players to knock each other out of the arena and score points. At the end of the round, player are ranked according to their scores and the highest score player will be the winner and crowned as the King!

Level Design

The Dummy Ground Arena

The Dummy Ground is supposed to be the training level for new players. When designing this arena, we made sure to not include any obstacles or level mechanics so that new players are able to learn and experiment with the characters they are not familiar with

Ice Breaker Arena

For Ice Breaker arena, we wanted to design an arena with the idea that there’s always a threat beneath the player’s feet. They would need to constantly move about and secure a favorable position so the floor beneath them does not get destroyed

Apple Falls Arena

For the Apple Falls arena, we wanted to reuse one of the older arena design which involved the use of apples. So we took the concept of using apples to power up and changed it to fit the current version of the game more where the apples will instead power up the arena’s hazard which is the river.

User Interface 

Here's some of the prototype UI design used in the earlier versions of the game

Eventually we decided to move on to 3D menus instead as we felt that it will look more aesthetically pleasing and that it could create a more immersive experience for the players. This also help make our game look more polished and higher quality.

In the character select screen, we wanted to let our players have a preview on how our character look and how they work by showing the 3D models and explaining the various attacks of each characters.

Same in arena select screen, we let the players have a preview on what the various levels in the game will look like. By pressing the Y button, they can read more about the levels which are written with some flavor text and information about the level mechanics.

In the victory screen, we display a big header to let everyone know who’s the winner while also showing how much scroe each player have scored in total. Fireworks effects and decorations are added to make the victory feel more grand and satisfying for the players.

Character Design

Sir Rander is a character that is big, strong but not very smart. He dreams of becoming a dashing knight in shining armour. That is why we gave him a more rugged look and to fit more with his story, he has less than optimal equipment and clothing for a knight.

​

Sir Rander’s normal attack is Shield Bash. He uses his shield and smashes his opponent with it.

​

His charge attack is Shield Charge. Sir Rander raises up his shield and charges forward, knocking away anyone in his path.

​

Sir Rander’s special ability is shield block which defends him from any incoming attacks for a few seconds.

Candice is a young girl and smaller in size compared to the other characters. But don’t let her looks and size fool you as she yields a strong magic power. Her theme is candies and her outfit is designed to be colorful like those candies she loves.

​

Candice’s normal attack is Candy Mine. She puts a candy shaped mine on the ground that will explode when an opponent steps on it.

​

Candice’s charge attack is Sweet Explosion. She throws a candy bomb that will explode after a set distance or when it comes into contact with an opponent

​

Her special ability is Sparkle. Candice is able to teleport forward in the direction she is facing.

Nina is a sadistic character that thrives on inflicting pain onto others for her own enjoyment. Some may call her crazy but she is smart and manipulative.  She wants to become the next ruler of the kingdom in order to turn it into her playground.

​

Nina’s normal attack is a Round Slash where she spins and slashes anyone near her

​

Her charge attack is Scythe Throw. She combines and throws her scythe forward, hitting those that come into contact.

​

​Her special ability is Shadow Blink. Nina is able to teleport to her scythe after throwing it.
